Welcome to Module 4!

-Welcome to Week 4! A major task of this week is to meet with me for a 1:1 conference. If you have not yet signed up for a required conference, please do so right away.

We are also moving on to Unit 2, which is focused on the topic of surveillance in the public space. All of our readings, discussions, and assignments will concentrate on this broad topic of surveillance in the public space and public sphere. We will ask questions such as: How much surveillance is acceptable to you? Does surveillance improve or detract from personal safety? How can an average person resist or avoid surveillance if they wish to do so? How are institutions creating cultures of surveillance, such as those in schools and workplaces? Why is the private citizen becoming more and more interested in surveillance systems (e.g. the 'home camera' phenomenon). Are we turning into detective citizens? How does a culture of freedom coexist with a culture of surveillance? This week, we are starting with surveillance that's close to home-- the college campus-- before pivoting to

Module 4 Learning Objectives

-Analyze how surveillance operates in public spaces, particularly on college campuses, and evaluate its implications for privacy, safety, and personal freedom.
-Develop and articulate informed opinions on the role of institutional and personal surveillance systems by engaging with current articles and multimedia sources.
-Prepare for and participate in a one-on-one writing conference to receive feedback and reflect on areas for growth, using that feedback to revise and refine writing practices for future assignments.
-Plan and draft a proposal for an argumentative paper by selecting a specific surveillance-related issue of interest, articulating a clear stance, and identifying key points and sources to support their argument.

-Read ‘A Mass Invasion of Privacy’ but No Penalties for Tim Hortons"
-Submit Paper #2 Proposal
-Complete Module 4 Discussion (Surveillance)
-Submit Paper #1 Reflection Exercise (Complete after conference)
Note: You should have completed your Paper #1 conference by now!
-Begin preparing Paper #2 (evidence of progress is due next week)
