  • Sociology of Popular Culture AND GSWS Special Topics

You may identify as a pop culture novice or as a pop culture maven, but all of us are surrounded by elements of commercial entertainment media. In this class, we will explore the sociological analysis of commercial popular culture, treating media as a component of our society that can create social problems and generate new social possibilities. The social problems and possibilities we will examine center on issues of identity. We will focus primarily on film, television, music, print and digital media, and the intersections of these formats with race, class, gender, sexuality, and disability. By the end of the semester, students should be able to… 1. Explain key concepts from sociology and apply them to popular culture (assessed through the quizzes), 2. Summarize key findings from the sociology of popular culture (assessed through the quizzes), 3. Conduct basic social research that examines popular culture (assessed through the content analyses), and 4. Use the tool of social media to share your own sociological analysis (assessed through the blog posts and the Twitter assignment).

  • Social Entrepreneurship

Social entrepreneurship is the process of community-based collaborative change-making. It is the application of both critical thinking and critical action strategies to targeted social problems. This course provides an opportunity for students to move from the identification and critique of social problems to the design of strategic solutions. The course is rooted in sociology, but the readings and assignments extend from sociological analysis to social activism, community engagement, business, and art.
